From Plum Pudding to Nuclear Model

In 1897, J.J. Thomson proposed that atoms were like plum pudding - a uniform sphere of positive charge with tiny negative electrons embedded throughout, like raisins in a pudding. This model explained how atoms could be electrically neutral.

Scientists discovered anode rays - positively charged particles that traveled in straight lines and were deflected toward negative plates. These rays, later identified as protons, showed that atoms contained positive particles too, not just electrons.

In 1909, Ernest Rutherford fired alpha particles at a thin gold foil. Most particles passed straight through, but shockingly, some bounced back! This was like firing bullets at tissue paper and having some bounce back at you.

Rutherford concluded that atoms must have a tiny, dense, positively charged nucleus at the center, with electrons orbiting around it like planets around the sun. Most of the atom is empty space, which is why most alpha particles passed through.

Thomson's plum pudding model couldn't explain why some alpha particles bounced back. If positive charge was spread uniformly throughout the atom, all particles should have passed through easily. The concentrated nucleus was the key!
